Situated approximately 450 kilometers northeast of Bangkok in the Isaan region, Khon Kaen is a major commercial and educational hub, and the gurdwara has long served as a vital community institution at the heart of this vibrant city.

The gurdwara's full name, ศรีคุรุสิงห์สภา, is the Thai rendering of "Sri Guru Singh Sabha," a name carrying deep significance in Sikh tradition — referencing the assembly (Sabha) of disciples of the Guru (Singh), devoted to the teachings of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the eternal, living scripture of Sikhism. The gurdwara serves not only as a place of daily worship but also as a community center offering langar (free communal meals), religious education, and a gathering space for festivals and ceremonies. Open to visitors of all faiths and backgrounds, ศรีคุรุสิงห์สภา embodies the core Sikh value of sarbat da bhala — the well-being of all.

The ground floor of the building houses the Langar Hall, a community kitchen where wholesome vegetarian meals are prepared and served to anyone who enters, with no distinctions of caste, creed, or religion. The second floor is dedicated to the Darbar Sahib, the main prayer hall, featuring a beautiful red-carpeted floor and a raised platform approximately one meter higher than the surrounding floor, upon which the Guru Granth Sahib is ceremonially installed and venerated. Visitors to the gurdwara are welcomed warmly and invited to sit quietly in the Darbar Sahib, listen to kirtan (devotional music), or join the congregation for prayers.

The story of ศรีคุรุสิงห์สภา in Khon Kaen begins with the broader wave of Punjabi-Sikh migration to Southeast Asia in the early twentieth century. Driven by the search for new economic opportunities, Sikh traders and craftsmen — many of them skilled fabric merchants and tailors — began arriving in Thailand during the late nineteenth century. Bangkok became the initial center of Sikh settlement, and by 1911 a substantial community had established itself across the country.

As Thailand's interior began developing commercially, Sikh entrepreneurs gradually spread to provincial cities throughout the kingdom. From approximately 1932, Sikh families began settling in Khon Kaen, drawn by business prospects in the growing provincial town. Historical accounts document one Punjabi family from Gujranwala in the Punjab arriving as early as 1916, setting roots in Baan Pai district of Khon Kaen province, making them among the earliest South Asian settlers in the Isaan region.

These pioneers were primarily fabric traders and tailors who established businesses serving the local Thai population. During the initial decades of the Sikh community's presence in Khon Kaen, there was no formal gurdwara. Religious prayers, scripture readings, and Gurpurab observances were conducted in the homes of community members on a rotating basis, with families hosting the congregation on Sundays and auspicious days — a practice that maintained religious cohesion while the community remained too small to support a permanent structure.

This tradition of home worship echoed the early Sikh experience in Bangkok, where the same practice was followed until 1912. The community grew steadily, and during the Vietnam War era a second wave of Sikh migrants relocated from Bangkok to cities with large American military bases, including Udon Thani and Khon Kaen, tailoring businesses to serve new economic opportunities. This influx helped grow the local Sikh population significantly.

In 1972, the Sikh community pooled resources and constructed a dedicated gurdwara building at 157-9 Ruamchit Road, officially establishing ศรีคุรุสิงห์สภา as the permanent spiritual home of Khon Kaen's Sikhs. In the decades since its founding, the gurdwara has grown as the social and religious heart of the Thai-Sikh community in northeastern Thailand, serving both long-established families and newer arrivals.
