Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar de Dubai

Guru Nanak Darbar is the first official Sikh gurdwara in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and the entire Middle East, located in the Churches Complex at Jebel Ali Village, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Named after Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, this magnificent structure stands as a spiritual beacon for the Sikh community in the UAE. The gurdwara serves over 50,000 Sikh residents of the emirate and attracts more than 800,000 visitors annually, making it one of the most visited religious sites in Dubai.

Situated along Sheikh Zayed Road at Exit 25 (Interchange 6), the three-story gurdwara spans over 100,000 square feet of built area on a plot of approximately 25,400 square feet, gifted by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This generous gesture underscored Dubai's enduring commitment to religious tolerance and multicultural harmony. The gurdwara is renowned for its breathtaking architecture, which artfully blends traditional Sikh design elements with contemporary construction techniques.

Its gold-plated dome, Italian marble interiors, Murano crystal chandeliers, and a reflective pond inspired by the legendary sarovar of the Golden Temple in Amritsar create an atmosphere of profound serenity and grandeur. A 54-meter circumambulatory Parikrama pathway allows devotees to perform their ritual walk in quiet contemplation. Guru Nanak Darbar has earned remarkable global recognition: it is the first ISO-certified gurdwara in the world, holding certifications for Quality Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Food Management, and Environmental Standards.

In April 2017, it entered the Guinness World Records by hosting the 'Breakfast for Diversity' event — serving breakfast simultaneously to over 600 people from 101 different nationalities, celebrating the UAE's Year of Giving and breaking the previous record of 55 nationalities. The gurdwara is a welcoming space open to people of all faiths. Its celebrated langar (community kitchen) serves free vegetarian meals to all visitors, embodying the Sikh principles of seva (selfless service) and sarbat da bhala (welfare of all).

Daily religious programs include the Asa ki Var (morning hymns) at 5:30 AM followed by Ardas at 7:15 AM, and evening programs from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. On Fridays, full-day Kirtan sessions fill the prayer hall with devotional music. The gurdwara also hosts Akhand Path, and Sikh wedding celebrations (Anand Karaj), serving as the spiritual and cultural hub of the South Asian diaspora in the Gulf.

The history of Guru Nanak Darbar in Dubai is one of faith, sustained community effort, and royal patronage. For decades, Sikhs residing in the UAE had no dedicated place of worship, gathering instead in private homes and rented spaces to pray and observe religious rites. As the Sikh population in Dubai grew substantially with the rapid expansion of the UAE's economy from the late 20th century onward, the community recognized the urgent need for a permanent, purpose-built gurdwara.

The pivotal moment came when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, magnanimously granted a plot of land at the Churches Complex in Jebel Ali Village, free of charge, for the construction of a Sikh gurdwara. This gesture was part of Dubai's broader policy of religious tolerance and coexistence, with the same complex housing houses of worship for multiple faith communities. Planning and fundraising began in earnest, with the global Sikh community contributing to a total construction cost of AED 65 million.

Construction officially commenced in May 2008. In June 2010, the foundation stone was ceremonially laid with full Sikh rites, marking a landmark milestone for Sikhs across the Gulf region. The internationally renowned Dubai-based architectural firm Holford Associates was appointed to design the structure.

The firm sought consultancy from Richard Adams of the United Kingdom, who had previously been involved with the prestigious Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara on Havelock Road in Southall, London. Designers Paul Bishop and Arafeh Bashir personally visited Sri Harmandar Sahib (the Golden Temple) in Amritsar, studying frescoes and wall paintings to faithfully incorporate traditional Sikh artistry into the new structure. Construction was completed by December 2011, and the gurdwara was formally inaugurated on January 17, 2012, in a ceremony attended by nearly 50,000 devotees — a testament to the depth of community anticipation and the historic importance of the occasion for Sikhs across the Middle East.

Since its opening, Guru Nanak Darbar has grown into a major landmark. In April 2017, it made international headlines when it hosted the 'Breakfast for Diversity' event, serving breakfast to more than 600 people from 101 nationalities and earning a Guinness World Record, broadcasting the universal Sikh values of inclusion and brotherhood to the world.
