Many settled across different states in Malaysia, with Perlis becoming home to a significant and dedicated community. The first gurdwara in Malaysia was established in 1873 inside police lines in Fort Cornwallis, but Perlis's own gurdwara would not be constructed for nearly another century.

Construction and Institutional Growth (1970 onwards)

A watershed moment arrived in 1970 when a new gurdwara was constructed in Kangar on land donated by a wealthy Sikh businessman who owned substantial estates across Penang, Kedah, and Perlis. Under the visionary leadership of Jarnail Singh, who served as president of the Sikh Gurdwara Perlis for 22 years, the institution flourished as a vital spiritual and cultural hub. Jarnail Singh's long tenure ensured stable leadership, community integration, and the establishment of strong spiritual foundations that continue to guide the gurdwara today.

The gurdwara's establishment coincided with a period of increasing religious consciousness among Malaysian Sikhs, who sought to preserve their cultural heritage while fully participating in Malaysian society. The formal recognition of Sikh gurdwaras received further institutional support with the formation of the Malaysian Gurdwaras Council in 1988, which became the representative body for all Sikhs in Malaysia and coordinated activities across the nation's 124 gurdwaras.
